Tony Joe Pena, 90, a lifelong resident of Fort Sumner, NM passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at his residence with his wife at his bedside. Tony was born on July 26, 1929 in Fort Sumner, NM to the home of Nestor and Guadalupita (Montoya) Pena. He was reared and attended school in Fort Sumner. Tony was a veteran of the US Army and served his country proudly during the Korean War. He was assigned to Company E, 1st Infantry Regiment. A lifelong catholic, he was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner where he served as Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Tony was united in marriage to Ola Faye Welch on December 28, 1972 in Juarez, Mexico. They made their home in Fort Sumner where Tony was employed for many years as a Water and Waste Water Operator for the Village of Fort Sumner. Tony loved working with horses and other animals, enjoyed fishing with Faye, raised his own beef and really enjoyed spending time with his nephews and nieces. Tony is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Joe Pena, Raymond Pena, Phillip Pena, and Benny Pena; five sisters Margaret Hernandez, Charlotte Pena, Lois Silva, Viola Mares, and Petra Pena. Survivors include his wife Faye Pena of the family home; brother Fele Pena of El Paso, TX; and numerous nephews, nieces, family and friends. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 24, 2020 from 1-4pm at Chavez Funeral Home, Fort Sumner, NM. Holy Rosary will be recited at 10:30 am Tuesday, February 25, 2020 followed by the Funeral Mass. Father Sotero A. Sena will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery with Gary Pena, Michael Pena, Joseph Pena, Robert Pena, Rick Mares, and Raymond Joe Zamora serving as pallbearers.
