Petra O. Chavez

Petra O. Chavez, 89 of Puerto De Luna, NM passed away at her home Friday, February 9, 2018. Mrs. Chavez was born December 31, 1929 in Pastura, NM to the home of Juan B. Ortega and Remegia (Pacheco) Ortega.  She attended school in Borica, NM and later in Santa Fe, NM.  Mrs. Chavez worked as a cook for the Santa Rosa Consolidated Schools in Puerto De Luna for several years.  She was a devoted parishioner at Nuestra Senora De Refugio Catholic Church and a member of the Sacred Heart Society.  In addition to her civic involvement, Mrs. Chavez worked alongside her family on the ranch in Puerto De Luna.  She also found time to sew, crochet-making beautiful afghan quilts, she canned many of the fruits and vegetables grown on the family ranch, and was known for her delicious tamales.Petra is preceded in death by her husband Isidro Chavez, her parents, son and daughter-in-law; Robert and Charlotte Chavez, daughter; Betty Chavez, Grandson; Raul Andrew Chavez, her brothers; Santiago Ortega, Pablo Ortega, Joe Ortega and her sisters; Betty Moya and Estella Arias.Survivors include her sons; Richard Chavez (Peggy) of Puerto De Luna, NM, Lee Roy Chavez (Rose) of Santa Rosa, NM,  Martin Chavez of Puerto De Luna, NM and daughters; Raime Chavez of Santa Rosa, NM, Mary Ann Clevenger (Rusty) of Rock Mount Missouri and Christina Chavez (Mike) of Clovis, NM.  Furthermore, she is survived by 15 Grandchildren, 41 Great-Grandchildren, 5 Great-Great Grandchildren and a host of family and friends, including a very special niece; Edwina Moya George. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Monday, February 12, 2018 at Nuestra Senora De Refugio Catholic Church in Puerto De Luna, NM.  The Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Nuestra Senora De Refugio, Tuesday February 13, 2018, with Father Sotero Sena officiating.  Burial will follow at El Calvario Cemetery in Puerto De Luna, NM.All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 923 S.
