Lois (Cones) Roper, 95 of Carrizozo, NM passed away Thursday evening, September 28, 2023 at Good Samaritan/Betty Dare Center in Alamogordo. She was born September 12, 1928 in Montoya, NM to the home of Johnny Herbert and Edna Harrison Cones.
She grew up in Cuervo, NM where she attended schools. Lois married Sam "Barney" Roper Jr. on October 3, 1947 in Santa Rosa, NM. They made their home in the Fort Sumner valley until 1965 before moving to Carrizozo.
Lois was a stay-at-home mom who worked on the family farm. She retired as a contract school bus driver for Carrizozo Schools. She also worked in a local grocery store between driving the bus.
Lois was a great cook, her green chile casserole was a hit at family and holiday gatherings. It was her go-to meal for funerals.
Lois was a talented seamstress, she made western shirts for her boys. Lois also enjoyed crocheting and made beautiful afghan blankets for all her family members, every grandchild received an afghan at graduation. Her family also received denim blankets made with love.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Sam Roper on August 17, 2002, an infant son Olin A. “Sonny” Roper in 1949, her parents Johnny and Edna Cones, two brothers Lloyd Cones and Clarence Cones, and sisters Lola Foster and Grace Foster.
Survivors include a daughter Barbara Noack (Bill) of Lovington, NM, three sons Ray Roper (Donna) of Springtown, TX, David Roper (Barbie) of Ancho, NM, and Sammy Roper (Kim) of Carrizozo, NM, one sister Annie Mae Finney of Fort Sumner, New Mexico along with seven grandchildren, Wesley Noack, Leslie Noack, Renee Beltran, Shad Roper, Ryan Roper, Justin Roper, Dusty Roper, 18 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Lois and Sam's wedding anniversary date, at 11:00 am Tuesday, October 3, 2023 in the Roper family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery with Betty Kirby Brazell officiating.
