Lizzie Ruth Barnes

Lizzie Ruth Barnes, 94, a resident of Vaughn, NM passed away Thursday, February 15, 2024, at her home with her family at her side.

Lizzie was born on February 28, 1929, in Royston, GA to the home of William Aaron and Bertie Lee (Roberts) Smith, and was raised in Greenville, SC.

Lizzie Married Wesley Jay Barnes on June 6, 1953, in Greenville, SC. They lived in Royston, GA from 1968 – 1981, Lubbock, TX from 1981 – 1982 and settled in Vaughn, NM in 1982.

Lizzie enjoyed needle work, puzzle books, loved reading and enjoyed listening to bluegrass and county music.

Lizzie is preceded in death by her parents William and Bertie Smith, husband Wesley Jay Barnes, brother William Aaron Smith Jr., and sister Evelyn Martin.

Survivors include her daughters Juanita Barnes (Randy Turner) of Vaughn, NM, Barbara Barnes of Albuquerque, NM, Alma Langston (Danny) of Royston, GA, and Janice Welker (Dennis) of Provo, UT; sons Chester Barnes of Clovis, NM, Pat Barnes (MaryLou) Clovis, NM, and Jeff Barnes of Edgewood, NM; sisters Frances Segars (Charles) and Betty Dodd (Bill); 22 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and several friends in Vaughn.

As per Lizzie’s request, cremation has taken place.

A gathering to celebrate Lizzie’s Life will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2024 from 1 – 3 PM at the Barnes family home in Vaughn, NM.
