James Allen Dunn, 80 a lifelong resident of Fort Sumner, NM peacefully passed away on October 30, 2023 at his daughter's home surrounded by his family. James was born July 28, 1943 in Fort Sumner to the home of James Allen and Faviola (Gauna) Dunn. He grew up in Fort Sumner where he attended school. James married Mary Esther Anaya on June 2, 1965 in Fort Sumner.
James worked for 24 years as the Maintenance Technician at the DeBaca General Hospital, and Pecos Valley Care Center. He also spent 7 years working as a ranch hand for Eduardo Trujillo in Guadalupe, NM.
James served in the United States Army and spent 30 months in Germany. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1967.
James was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8331 of Fort Sumner, and a charter member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus at Santa Rosa. He was also a member of the Fort Sumner Jaycees and St. Anthony Catholic Church.
He is preceded in death by his father James Allen Dunn, his mother and step-father Faviola and Ramon T. Sena, his wife Mary Esther Dunn in 2021, one son James Allen Dunn Jr on September 09, 2023, a granddaughter Mary Yvonne Dunn, a great grandson Corbin Aragon, three sisters Dolores Ortega, Jean Chavez, and Lucy Roybal, and two brothers Edward Sena and Jessie Sena.
A loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle James will be missed by his family. Survivors include five children, three daughters Deborah Maupin (Will) of House, NM, Sarah Aragon of Fort Sumner, and Corinne Mares Ulibarri of Rio Rancho, two sons, B.J. (Elia) Dunn of Fort Sumner, and Randy Dunn of Albuquerque, two granddaughters he raised Jessica Harris (Ryan) of Clovis and Lenore Christensen (Elton) of Hawaii. Three sisters Ruby (George) Gonzales of Fort Sumner, Angie Mares of Roswell, and Reba (Rudy) Casaus all of Albuquerque, two brother-in-laws Rafael Roybal of Clovis and Paul Chavez of Belen. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and many dear friends.
Visitation hours for family and friends will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023 from 1pm to 5pm at Chavez Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church on the Hill in Fort Sumner, NM with Pastor Richard Terrell officiating. Interment with military honors to follow at the Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Rafael Roybal, Richard Gonzales, Larry Roybal, George Ortega, Gerald Ortega, and Rudy Casaus. Honorary bearers will include Andy Anaya, Eddie "Sonny" Anaya, Martin Blea, Bob Addison, and Miguel Baltazar Jr.
