Esmeralda R Barela

Esmeralda R. Barela, 107, a resident of Santa Rosa passed away peacefully on Friday, September 21, 2018, at the South Valley Care Center in Albuquerque, NM with her family by her side. Mrs. Barela was born on September 4, 1911, in Colonias, NM to the home of Carlos and Dolores Chavez Marquez Romero. She was raised in Colonias and attended school there. Esmeralda married Escolastico Barela on October 10, 1929 in Amarillo, TX. A lifelong Catholic, Esmeralda was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa. She enjoyed reading her Bible, cooking for her family and spending time with them. She will be remembered for her fresh tortillas, sweet rice, and galletas dulce. Esmeralda loved sharing stories with her family about her life growing up in the “olden days”. She is preceded in death by her parents Carlos and Dolores, husband Escolastico, daughter Dolores B. Saiz, special grandson Raymond Saiz, and grandchildren Gilbert Saiz, Joann Gallegos, Maryann Torres, and Terry Chavez. Survivors include her grandchildren Jane Garcia of Albuquerque, NM , Mary Saiz of Roswell, NM, Frances Ulibarri (Thomas) of Santa Rosa, NM, Dolores Coronado of Albuquerque, NM, Robert Saiz (Marie) of Albuquerque, NM, Joe Saiz (Tammy) of Farmington, NM, Lorenzo Paul Saiz of Albuquerque, NM, Teresa Lopez of Santa Rosa, NM, special granddaughter Annabel Saiz of Santa Rosa, NM, granddaughter-in-law & caretaker whom Esmeralda previously lived with, Nancy Saiz of Albuquerque, NM, and great-granddaughter and caretaker Bernice Tenorio of Santa Rosa. Also surviving is a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, family, and friends. Public visitation will take place on Thursday, September 27 and Friday, September 28 from 1-4 PM at Chavez Funeral Home in Santa Rosa, NM, and Saturday morning prior to the Mass at the Church.A family Rosary will be recited on Friday, September 28, 2018, at 7:00 PM from Chavez Funeral Home in Santa Rosa. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 11:00 AM at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Father Antonio Mondragon as celebrant, burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Santa Rosa, NM. Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Saiz, Rex Saiz, Robert Saiz, Sr., Robert Saiz, Jr., Moises Saiz, Jose Saiz, and Eddie Salas.
