Carlos Hernandez

Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, August 26, 2021 at St. Anthony Parish in Fort Sumner, NM with Father Christopher Bernabe and Father Sotero Sena concelebrating. Interment with military honors will be held at 1:30 pm Friday, August 27, 2021 at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Urn bearerer will be Carlos' son, Paul Hernandez. Honorary bearers will include Fred Gauna, Vidal Gauna, Alex Garza, Tito Vigil, Earl Sena, and Leonard Sena. Carlos J. Hernandez, 90 of Fort Sumner, NM passed away on Tuesday evening, July 13, 2021 at his home with his loving family at his bedside. He was born July 12, 1931 in Yeso, New Mexico to the home of Miguel and Delfinia (Garcia) Hernandez. Carlos attended schools in Yeso and Fort Sumner. Following graduation he began work with the NM Department of Transportation. He served in the U.S. Army from 1947 until his honorable discharge in 1951. On September 9, 1951 he was united in marriage to Pauline Olona in Clovis, NM. They made their home in California for many years where Carlos worked for Bethlehem Steel for eight years and Eitel-McCullough Electronic for 25 years until his retirement. Carlos and Pauline made Fort Sumner their home. Carlos served on the Fort Sumner Housing Authority Board, he was a member of St. Anthony Parish, and a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight, and a past Post Commander for the V.F.W. Post in Santa Rosa, NM. Carlos enjoyed playing golf, chess, reading, and was always ready for a home repair project with his carpentry skills. Carlos is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Bertha Richardson, two sisters Antonia Garza, and Lupe Sena, two brothers Robert Hernandez and Sotero Hernandez. A loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Carlos is survived by Pauline Hernandez, his wife of 70 years, a son Paul Hernandez (Deborah) of Redwood City, CA, Diana Rogers (Leticia Fregoso) of San Jose, CA and Patricia Hernandez (Christine Lustfield) of San Jose, CA, eight grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many good friends.
