Jane Craig, 88 of Fort Sumner, NM died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Retirement Ranches of Clovis, NM following an illness. She was born December 7, 1920 in Mobeetie, TX to the home of John and Lucy May (Hammer) Dunkle. She was one of seven children born to this union her siblings included Alma Lucille Dunkle, Vida Lee Dunkle, John Floyd Dunkle, O.Woodrow “Jake” Dunkle, Ernest Edward “Bill” Dunkle and Raymond Frederick “Dunk” Dunkle. Jane attended grade school at Mobeetie,TX, Hay Hallow, TX and graduated from high school at Alanreed, TX. She attended Draughns Business College in Lubbock, TX where she received a business degree. She worked as a bookkeeper in Lubbock, TX. Jane met C.B. “Sprout” Craig while visiting her sister in Gates City, NM; they were married on June 14, 1941 in Lubbock. Sprout and Jane made their home in Fort Sumner in 1946 where the family owned and operated Sprout’s Café until October 2004. Jane was a member of The Church on The Hill in Fort Sumner, a past member of PTA, Valley Quilting Club and United Methodist Woman’s Club. She enjoyed working crossword and Jig Saw Puzzles. Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her husband C. B. “Sprout” Craig in 1984; four sisters Alma Meek, Vida Byerley, Peggy Burr, and Mabel Harrison; three brothers Jake, Bill, and Raymond Dunkle. Survivors include two sons Jesse Craig and wife Bobbie of Odessa, TX; Dan Craig of Fort Sumner; two granddaughters Dr. Traci Craig, of Moscow, Idaho and Kimberly Lascala and husband David of Coram, NY along with several nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, May 23, 2009 from The Church on The Hill in Fort Sumner, NM with Sister Anna Teeter officiating. Burial will follow in the Craig family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Frank Martz, Andy Winn, Vincent Stallard, Randy Martinez, Jim Carter and Steve Hatler. Honorary bearers will include Bill West, Bill Wertheim, Bonnie Archuleta, Lee Koll, Pete Ratliff, Red West, Cecil West and all her family and friends. The family prefers memorial contributions to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Assn. P.O. Box 180, Fort Sumner, NM 88119 or to The Church on The Hill, Building Fund, P.O. Box 467, Fort Sumner, NM 88119.
