Maria U. “Fanny" Muniz, age 88, died Friday, November 2, 2007 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center Albuquerque, NM following an illness. Fanny as she was affectionately known was born December 3, 1918 in Montoya, NM to the home of Leandro and Rosana (Maes) Muniz. She served in the United States Army as a Medical Techician from 1943 until 1945. While serving in the Army she received the Victory Medal, WAAC Service Ribbon, American Theater Campaign and the Good Conduct Medal. Fanny was a longtime Guadalupe County Rancher having ranched in the Borica and Milagro area. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and doing taxidermy. Fanny was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa. She is preceded in death by her parents, three sisters Gertrudes Muniz, Maria Alarid, Donaciana Pacheco; four brothers Jesus Muniz, Jose Muniz, Antonio Muniz and an infant brother Jacobo Muniz; brothers-in-law Octaviano Alarid and Lorenzo Pacheco. Survivors include a brother Leo Muniz and wife Rita of Milagro, special nieces; Lucille Serrano and husband Enrico of Milagro, Esther Johnson and husband Melvin of Corona, Jessica Serrano and husband Jimmy of Santa Rosa, sisters-in-law Otilia Muniz of Santa Rosa and Bennie Muniz of Rancho de Taos along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Thursday, November 8, at 7:00 PM from St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 9, at 10:00 AM from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Milagro, NM with Father Antonio Mondragon officiating. Burial will follow at the Church Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be Joey Muniz, Michael Muniz, Melvin Johnson, Leo Muniz, Jr. All services are entrusted to the Chavez Funeral Home of Santa Rosa.
