Gilberta Maestas

Gilberta G. Maestas, age 88, passed away on September 8, 2009 at the Mountain View Hospital in Las Cruces following an illness. Gilberta was born on July 7, 1921 in Anton Chico, NM to the home of Nicacio and Rosalia Sanchez Garcia. She married Antonio Maestas on January 1, 1940 in Anton Chico. She and her husband were longtime residents of Cuervo where they owned and operated the Cuervo Bar and Texaco Gas Staion for many years. Gilberta was a member of the St .Rose of Lima Parish and the Santo Nino Church in Cuervo where she served as Mayordomo for many years. She enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, she was an excellent cook and did a lot of handiwork. Gilberta is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Antonio, brothers; Nicacio Garcia and Horace Garcia, sisters; Natalia Maestas and Mary Hatch. Survivors include her sons; Tony Maestas and wife Marylou of Cuervo, Fred Maesats also of Cuervo, and her daughter; Rosalee Wimbley of Las Cruces. Grandchildren; Donna Maestas of Las Cruces, Brenda Maestas of San Antonio, TX, Beverly Maestas and husband Victor of Las Vegas, NM, Erica Padilla and husband Lyndsey of Dilia, Angelique Wimbley of Las Cruces, Alex Maestas, Greg Maestas and Dana Maestas all of Albuquerque and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers; Boni Garcia and wife Marcella, Max Garcia and wife Jenny, sister; Vicky Serrano and husband Zolio all of Albuquerque, brothers and sisters in law; Frank and Agneda Maestas of La Loma, Reymundo Maestas also of La Loma and Bella Pino of Las Vegas, NM along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be conducted on Friday, September 11, at 7:00 PM from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 12. at 11:00 AM from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anton Chico with Father Antonio Mondragon officiating.
