Hoyt M. Roy, 94 of Shallowater, TX and formerly of Fort Sumner, NM died Monday, September 18, 2006 in Lubbock, TX following an illness. Hoyt was born April 20, 1912 in Tatum, NM the daughter of Melvin Hoyt Lewis and the former Maggie Elsie Moore. Hoyt made her home in Lea County until the age five when her family moved to the Fields Community north of Melrose in 1918. She attended school at West Chapel Schoolhouse through the 8th grade. She married Hat Roy on June 21, 1936 at her family home 5 miles south of House, NM. Hoyt was a longtime educator; she taught school for 33 years including Porter and Forrest in Quay County, Yeso, NM, 12 years at Santa Rosa, and many years at Fort Sumner. Hat and Hoyt made their home in Fort Sumner in 1960. Hoyt was a longtime member of Eastern Star and held several local and state offices including Worthy Matron and Past State Grand Chaplain. She was also a life member of the New Mexico Education Association. Hoyt became a Christian at an early age; she was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Las Vegas, NM. She was active at First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner and Shallowater, TX where she organized the church libraries. For many years Hoyt planned and prepared the funeral meals at First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner. She was preceded in death by her husband Hat Roy in 1993; her parents, and three brothers Elvin, Roy, and Pat Lewis. Survivors include a son Peyton Hoyt Roy and wife Anita of Las Vegas, NM; daughter Dora Potter of Shallowater, TX; two grandsons Curtis Roy and wife Becky of Spokane, WA; Royking Potter and wife Kathy of Shallowater, TX; three granddaughters Celeste Rowan of Rock Port, TX; Cheryl Potter of Gatesville, TX; Dena Potter of Lubbock, TX; five great-grandchildren Keshia Potter, Lauren Rowan, Travis Rowan, Cameron Potter, and Savannah Potter. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2006 from the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner with Rev. Coy Brewer officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Lloyd Russ, Curtis Roy, Royking Potter, Roger Lewis, and Pat Ed Lewis. Memorial contributions may be made the the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, The First Baptist Church, or the Portales Baptist Children’s Home in memory of Hoyt Roy.
