Bertha E. Killough, 92 of Muleshoe, TX and formerly of Fort Sumner, NM died August 16, 2010 at Muleshoe Area Medical Center following an illness. She was born August 8, 1918 in Kiowa County, Oklahoma to the home of Austin William Darnell and the former Ethel Cordis Munch. She lived in Kiowa County until age 15 when her family moved to Muleshoe. Bertha attended and graduated from Muleshoe High School. She married Travis Killough on Dec. 21, 1940 in Clovis, NM. They made their home in Fort Sumner for many years. Bertha enjoyed playing dominos at the Fort Sumner Senior Center, working in her yard and drinking coffee with friends. She moved to Muleshoe, TX in 2001 to be near her family. Bertha is preceded in death by her husband Travis Killough in 1975; her parents Austin W. and Ethel Darnell; three sisters Nellie Darnell Holman, Gracie Darnell Francis and Lettie Ellen Traweek. She is survived by several nieces and nephews including JoeAnn Puckett of Muleshoe, TX; Bill Holman and Charles Holman of Albuquerque, NM; Odus Francis of North Agusta, SC; Lettie Ellen Roberts of Whiteface, TX and Bill Traweek of Tyler, TX along with several great nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at the Chavez Funeral Home from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm prior to the service on Wednesday. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from the Killough Family Plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery with Mr. Dan Craig officiating. The family prefers memorial contributions in Bertha’s memory to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 180, Fort Sumner, NM 88119.
