J.K. Barfield III

“J.K.” Barfield III, 66 of Texico, NM died Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at his home following an illness. J.K. was born March 18, 1940 in Stanton, TX to the home of James Knox Barfield II and the former Thelma Donna Burleson. “J.K.” attended grade school at Stanton, TX, mid school at Clovis, NM and graduated from Fort Sumner High School. He attended N.M.S.U. in Las Cruces. J.K. married Sherry Cortese on March 20, 1959 in Fort Sumner. J.K. was employed by Withers Motor Company; Valley Feed & Grain; and City Gas Company. He also worked for Quay County Butane; Gambles in Fort Sumner; and Southern Union Gas Company in Clovis. He retired from PNM where he was employed for 27 years. J.K. was a member of the Fort Sumner Lion’s Club and the Wild Turkey Federation. J.K. and Sherry made their home in Texico in 1977. J.K. was preceded in death by his son Jarrod Barfield on November 9, 2000; his parents; three sister’s Dorothy Jean Barfield, Mary Catherine Bristow, and Glen Alene Hromas. Survivors include his wife Sherry Barfield of the home in Texico; a son James Knox Barfield IV and wife Lori of Flagstaff, AZ; a daughter Christi Arlene Edwards and husband Joel of Texico, NM; one sister Lou Ann Cortese and husband Gerald Don of Fort Sumner; six grandchildren James Knox Barfield V, Adam Barfield, Sean Heaton, Ashlee Heaton, Crystal Edwards, and Jenny Edwards, one great-granddaughter Mariya Hogg, along with several nieces, nephews and other relatives. The family prefers memorial contributions in J.K.’s memory to the Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 629; Portales, New Mexico 88130. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2006, at First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner, New Mexico with Rev. Jim Peabody and Rev. Coy Brewer officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday and Friday from 1pm to 6pm. Pallbearers will include Knox Cortese, Brent Ratliff, Joe Don Cortese, Darin Ratliff, Eddie Ratliff, Wes Gant, Mikey Cortese, and Johnny Odegaard. Honorary bearers will include Luke Cortese, Howard Miller, Aaron Cortese, Neil Kron, Jack Achen, Adam Barfield, Jake Barfield, Sean Heaton, Jeff Hromas, and Rodney Hromas.
