LUIS P. SERRANO, 89, Rosary Services will be held on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. from Nuestra Senora de Refugio Church in Puerto de Luna, New Mexico. FUNERAL MASS will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 also from Nuestra Senora de Refugio with Father Joseph Thomas, CMI officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Luis Serrano was born on April 27, 1920 in Santa Rosa, New Mexico to Simon and Petra Serrano. He proudly served in the US Army during Work War II and was honorably discharged in October, 1945 at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. He married the love of his life, Dulce Mares on July 25, 1949 in Santa Rosa. Throughout most of his life he worked for Gulf Oil Company. He was also a successful commercial business owner. Luis was a charter member of the Knight of Columbus Council 5146 Gabriel Coury in Santa Rosa. He was the first Grand Knight and served in that position on three different occasions during his K of C career. As a member of the Santa Rosa volunteer fire department he also served as Fire Chief. A life-long supporter of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church & School, he served on the church parish council and was a member of the Lions Club and the American Legion. Luis was a devoted and loving husband and father who cherished his family. He loved to tell stories of his days in the war and never met a stranger. Luis also enjoyed fishing, was an avid bird watcher and loved gardening. The family suggest memorials be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Santa Rosa, N.M. He was preceded in death by his son Dennis Serrano on January 23, 1993; two sisters; and a brother. Luis is survived by his wife Dulce of Borger; four daughters, Christina Lopez and husband Randy of Borger, Louise Montoya and husband Fred of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Janna Kiehl and husband John of Amarillo, and Bernadine Young and husband Martin currently of Bogata, Columbia; a sister Alice Romo of Coppell; six brothers, Adolph Serrano, Robert Serrano, and Charles Serrano all of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, Simon Serrano Jr., and Zolio Serrano both of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Frank Serrano of The Woodlands; eight grandchildren, Martin Lopez, Carmela Gandy and her husband Toby, Erica Padilla, Janelle Navarro and her husband Rudy, Zak Weed and her husband Terry, Blane Young and his wife Hannah, Spencer Young, and Dennissa Young; three great-grandchildren, Cole Gandy, Asia Gandy, and Brody Gandy Serving as Pallbearers will be; Sec Rivera, Andy Hernandez, Herman Baca, Tudy Sanchez, Lou Chavez and Andy Zamora. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be; Cirilio Baros, Joe E Martinez, Benito Via, members of the Knights of Columbus and Mr. Serrano’s brothers.
