Arturo Griego, age 74, passed away on February 14, 2010 at the Guadalupe County Hospital following an illness. Arturo was born on September 11, 1935 in Santa Rosa, NM to the home of Felix and Amalia Duran Griego. He was reared and attended schools in Santa Rosa. Arturo served his country by joining the United Stated Army in 1953 until 1956 and again from 1957 through 1960. During his time in the Army he received the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, as well as the Sharpshooter Badge and the Parachutist Badge. Arturo was proud to be a member of the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles”. Arturo’s passion was playing the guitar, he also enjoyed hunting, hiking, arrowhead collecting, fishing, playing pool and spending time with his wife, family and friends. Arturo worked for the Santa Rosa Consolidated Schools for many years where he was well respected by both the faculty and students. He also worked for various construction companies as a carpenter, labor or operator, the City of Santa Rosa; he also attended Camp Luna where he received his certificate in drafting. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother; Daniel “Chief’ Griego, his sister; Gloria Griego, an infant son, his brother’s in law; Benny Romero, Pino Romero, Tony Lopez, Richard Grant and Arthur Martinez. Survivors include his wife Terry of the family home in Santa Rosa, his daughter; Juanita Romero of Santa Rosa, his sons; Robert Griego and wife Tina of Bloomfield, NM, Richard Griego and wife Yvette of Santa Rosa, Ray Griego and wife Theresa also of Santa Rosa, his grandchildren; Jason, Vanessa, Felicia, Jose, Robert, Jr., Audriana, Elicia, Ashlee, Mariah, Andres and Cameron, great grandchildren; Matthew, Jared and Aneya. Also surviving are his sisters; Herlinda Talbott and husband Louie of Salineville, OH, Lydia Martinez of Santa Rosa, Ida Lopez of Santa Rosa, Clorie Gallegos and husband Steve of Puerto De Luna, Nancy Gonzalez and husband Chris of Albuquerue, his mother in law; Flora Romero of Santa Rosa, and brothers in law; Nick Romero, Jr. and wife Fabby of Bernalillo, Lorenzo Romero and wife Cecilia of Santa Rosa, Tommy Gallegos and wife Gloria of Mora, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 7:00 PM from St. Rose of Lima Church. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 10:00 AM also from St. Rose Church with Father Anthony Bolman officiating. Burial of cremains will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers for Arturo will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren. All services for Arturo have been entrusted to the Chavez Funeral Home of Santa Rosa.
