Carolina L. Griego, 93 of Fort Sumner died Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM following an illness. She was born May 18, 1912 at Canada Colorado, in Guadalupe County, the daughter of Albaro Lopez and the former Ruperta Sandoval. She attended school at Alamo, NM. Carolina married Susano Griego on September 4, 1929 in Santa Rosa. They ranched northeast of Fort Sumner until his death in 1949. Following her husband’s death Carolina moved into Fort Sumner where she raised her family. Carolina was a homemaker, a member of American Legion Unit 21 Auxiliary where she received the Sergeant At Arms medal. Carolina was a devoted member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. She was a loving, generous, and family oriented mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She always donated to numerous charities and organizations including St. Jude’s, The American Cancer Society, and The American Heart Fund. She was preceded in death by her husband Susano Griego in 1949; her parents; a son Albaro Griego, grandson Michael Griego, daughter-in-law Esther Griego; four brothers Isaac Lopez, Max Lopez, Jack Lopez, and Nick Lopez; eight sisters Adelaida Roybal, Rosario Roybal, Maria Roybal, Alisia Roybal, Olympia Lujan, Juanita Lopez, Pablita Lopez, and Dulsenea Gutierrez. Survivors include a daughter Crusita Sena and husband Ramon of Clovis; three sons Nicolas Griego and wife Jo; Juan Griego and wife Viola of Fort Sumner; Sam Griego of Las Vegas, NM; a nephew raised as a son Eddie Roybal and wife Irene of Las Vegas, NM; a daughter in law Charlotte Griego of Fort Sumner; one sister Louisa Gonzales of Fort Sumner; three sisters-in-law Barbara Griego, Margie Tapia of Albuquerque, Eloisa Lopez of Fort Sumner; and a brother-in-law Jose Martinez of Albuquerque. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2006 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2006 with burial at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Father Gerald Johnson will officiate. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Robb Griego, Johnny Ray Griego, Kurt Griego, Nicolas Griego, Jerry Griego, and Daniel Michael Sena. Honorary Bearers will be all granddaughters, nephews, nieces, other family members and her many friends. Visitation hours will be Friday from 1pm to 6pm at the funeral home and Saturday from 10am to 11am at the church.
