Gladys Boren, 91 a longtime Fort Sumner resident died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at her home following an illness. She was born February 22, 1918 in Washita, Arkansas to the home of Clyde and Sara (Scrimshire) Gray. She married Paul Clarence Boren in Fort Sumner on December 10, 1938. She worked for many years as the secretary for the De Baca County Extension Agent. Gladys was a longtime member of the Women’s Club and the Valley Quilting Club. Gladys was active in the American Cancer Society, she was a Pink Lady at the De Baca General Hospital, and was honored with the Hall of Fame Award by the De Baca County Chamber of Commerce in 1999. Her hobbies included working in her yard, painting and visiting with her friends. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Paul C. Boren in 2000; a sister Imagen Gray and two brothers Bill Gray and Johnny Bob (Buddy) Gray who died in 2008. Gladys is survived by two nieces, Belinda Furrow and husband Mike of Clovis, NM; Micki Stout of West Monroe, LA four nephews Greg Gray and wife Camille of Grapevine, TX; Tim Gray and wife Andrea of Sonoma, CA; Jeff Gray and wife Mary of Ramona, CA and Gary Gray of Bristol, VA, she is also survived by her longtime caretaker Delia Caballero of Fort Sumner and many friends. Visitation will be held on Friday from 11am to 6pm at the Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, March 28, 2009 from the First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner with Rev. Keith Niehaus officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Carlos Chavez, Tanner Mack, Carlos Chavez Jr., Felix Chavez, Justin Ingram, Greg Ingram, and Brandon Chavez.
