Tom Tanuz, 68 of Fort Sumner, NM died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM following an illness. Tom was born December 29, 1939 in Pecos, NM to the home of Tomas Tanuz Sr. and the former Dolores Gonzales. He attended Pecos Independent Schools. He made his home in Pecos for many years and served as President of the Pecos School Board. He moved to Fort Sumner where he married Wilma Hedgecoke on November 14, 1987. Tom worked for the Raton Port of Entry, Pecos Monastery Baker, Pecos Forest Service, as a Car Salesman in Albuquerque and Fort Sumner, a restaurant owner, and Owner of Golden T. Enterprises. While living in Fort Sumner Tom owned and operated a Laundromat and a small engine repair shop. His hobbies included fishing, story telling, reading and hunting. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Manuel Tanuz and sister Amada Gillum. Survivors include his wife Wilma Tanuz of Fort Sumner; two sons Adam R. Tanuz and wife Nydia; Mark K. Tanuz all of Albuquerque; one granddaughter Erika L. Tanuz of Albuquerque; five brothers Tony Tanuz and wife Martha of Pecos, NM; Billy Tanuz and wife Tina of Milan, NM; Jimmy Tanuz and wife Bernice of Pecos, NM; Steve Tanuz and wife Jeanie of Pecos, NM; Augustine Cruz and wife Angela of Canyon City, Colorado; two sisters Dolores Sena and husband Felix of Pecos, NM and Lucille Maestas of Pecos, NM. Also surviving is his ex-wife Gail Tanuz of Pecos, NM; step-children Terry Joyce and husband Mike of Springfield, Virginia; Jeanie Kraft and husband Dennis of Ingals, Kansas; Donald Burk of Fort Sumner; five step-grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 2, 2008 from the Fort Sumner Church of Christ with Jesse Ortiz officiating. Cremation has taken place. A second service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, October 3, 2008 from the Sheriff’s Posse Building in Pecos, NM. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner, NM.
