Mayo P. Campos, age 63, passed away unexpectedly on October 14, 2009 at the Guadalupe County Hospital. Mayo was born on April 18, 1946 in Pastura, NM to the home of Pedro and Annie Martinez Campos. He was reared and attended schools in Santa Rosa. Mayo married Virginia Vigil on July 24, 1971 in Santa Rosa. Mayo worked construction was a mechanic and also served as Police Officer with the City of Santa Rosa and a Deputy with the Guadalupe County Sheriffs Department. He served two terms as Guadalupe County Sheriff where he was proud of being the first Republican to win the office of Sheriff in 28 years. During his term as Guadalupe County Sheriff he was instrumental in the standard upkeep of the jail, he acquired many grants and was the first to bring the DARE program to Santa Rosa. He was recently working as a Site Supervisor for Security for Wackenhut Corp. Mayo enjoyed spending time with his family, joking around and was always busy working on different projects. He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister. Survivors include his wife Virginia of the family home in Santa Rosa, his son; Santana Campos and wife Rose of Santa Rosa, a daughter; Dorothy Campos of Albuquerque, a granddaughter he helped raise; Latoya Silva, a nephew, Pat Vigil who he also helped raise; and his three grandchildren Zachary Campos, Santana Campos, Jr., and Jasmine Valverde. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters; Leroy Campos and wife Annie of Santa Rosa, Armando Campos and wife Nancy of Santa Rosa, Carlos Campos and wife Mary Lou of Albuquerque, Jerry Campos and wife Connie of Santa Rosa, Arnold Campos of Santa Rosa, Mary Romero and husband Sam of Las Vegas, NM, Vivian Lopez and husband John of Santa Rosa, Adela Mata of Santa Rosa, Diane Campos of Santa Rosa, Emily Foust and husband Leonard of Shreveport, LA and Angie Barba of Belen along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Sunday, October 18, at 7:00 PM from Nuestra Senora de Refugio Catholic Church in Puerto De Luna. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Monday, October 19, at 10:00 A.M. also from Nuestra Senora de Refugio Church with Father Joseph Thomas, CMI officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Santa Rosa. Serving as Pallbearers will be Mayo’s brothers; Leroy, Armando, Carlos, Jerry and Arnold Campos, his brother’s in law; Tito Vigil, Steve Vigil, Raymond Vigil, Rudy Vigil and Pat Vigil.
