Chano Mares

May 2, 1923 — January 29, 2009

Crescenciano “Chano” Mares, age 85, was born on May 2, 1923 in For Sumner, NM, the third child of six to Rito Mares and Caterina Ribera and passed away January 29, 2008 at the St. Therese Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Albuquerque. Chano proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II on board the Battleship USS California from June 4, 1943 until February 17, 1946. He is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers; Hilbert Mares and Albert Mares. Survivors include three brothers; Thomas Mares of Fort Sumner, Joe Ruben Mares and wife Margie of Albuquerque and Robert Orlando Mares of Belen along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. Rosary services will be held at 9:30 am Thursday, February 5, 2009 followed by Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Father Steve Sanchez will officiate. Interment of cremains with Military Honors will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. All services are entrusted to the Chavez Funeral Home of Fort Sumner.
