Yvonne Deck, 73 a longtime Fort Sumner resident died Wednesday, January 05, 2000, at Gila Regional Medical Center, Silver City, NM following an illness. Yvonne was born January 26, 1926 in O’Donnell, Texas to the home of William Mose Cox and the former Eula Ethel Stuart. She made her home in the Fort Sumner area in 1942. She farmed in the Fort Sumner Valley for many years. Yvonne was a member of the Fort Sumner Senior Citizens Center; the Thoroughbred Horse Association Jockey Club at La Mesa Park in Raton, NM and Sunland Park, NM; Aberdeen Angus Association, and the American Quarter horse Association. Yvonne enjoyed Oil painting and the companionship of her pet dog, “J.J.”. She was a longtime member of the Christ Full Gospel Church in Fort Sumner. Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband James Arthur “Wild Horse” Edwards in 1971; her father in 1962 and mother in 1995. Yvonne was a loving mother, grandmother, neighbor, and friend. Survivors include a son Joel Arthur and wife Linda Kay Edwards of Silver City, NM; a daughter Linda Joyce Smith of Alta Loma, CA, four grandchildren Lisa Edwards of Scottsdale, AZ, Jolene and husband Marty Latta of Tucson, AZ; Scott Irion of Scottsdale, AZ; Jason Edwards of Las Cruces, NM, one great-grandson Dustin Latta of Tucson and her beloved, pet and companion, “J.J”, a Chinese Crested dog. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 8, 2000 from the Christ Full Gospel Church in Fort Sumner with Rev. Mike Teeter officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steve Gallegos, Scott Irion, Jason Edwards, Marty Latta, Frank Martz, and Joann Detrich. Honorary Bearers will include Bob Addison, Juan Chavez, Dr. Ed Fikany, Dr. Jack Vick, Dr. Joyce Roberts, Dr. Kathleen Haynes, Dr. Barry Ramo, Members of the Fort Sumner Ambulance Service, De Baca General Hospital Staff, Gerald Sena, Cecil and June Mayo, Ada Mae Fox, Carol Martz, Sharon Kay, Diane Segura, along with all her many friends and neighbors. The family prefers memorial contributions to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 180, Fort Sumner, NM 88119. Visitation hours will be Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturday from 10am to 12 noon. All arrangements entrusted to Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
