Bob Head, 79 a lifelong De Baca County rancher died Monday, September 14, 2009 at his home in Fort Sumner following an illness. He was born July 18, 1930 in Hassell, NM to the home of Willie Ray Head and the former Ora Agnes Briscoe. Bob attended and graduated from Fort Sumner High School. He was inducted into the United States Marines on March 6, 1952 and served until his honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal on February 26, 1954. His military citations include the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. Bob married Jean Borden on April 8, 1955. He worked for many years for the C.D. Jones Ranch; during this time he also owned and operated a cattle ranch NE of Fort Sumner. Bob and Jean owned and operated the Silver Dollar Antiques store in Fort Sumner for many years. He attended the Fort Sumner Church of Christ. Bob was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was a devoted family man, a man of enormous gifts who was well respected by his ranching neighbors. One ranch neighbor stated “if you can’t get along with Bob Head you couldn’t get along with nobody.” He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Jean Stobb. Survivors include his wife Jean Head; a son Jimmy Head and wife Barbara; a daughter Sheri Ann Head all of Fort Sumner; two sisters, Wathana Cobo and husband Ceasar of Rio Rico, AZ; Wanda Walker of Portales and a brother-in-law Harlan Stobb of Portales. Also surviving are two grandchildren Arley Head and wife Brandi of Fort Sumner, Heather Nicole Head of Las Vegas, NV and one great-grandson Justin James Head of Fort Sumner. Graveside services were held at 10:00 am Saturday, September 19, 2009 from Locust Grove Cemetery, Northeast of Fort Sumner with Rev. Butch Schneider officiating. Pallbearers were Arley Head, Jason Schneider, Sean Reagan, Bill Statts, Harlan Glenn Stobb and Matt West. Honorary bearers will be Frank McRee, Justin James Head and all his many friends and neighbors. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 804 N. Fifth Street; Fort Sumner. NM.
