Clarence Cones, 70 of Fort Sumner, NM died Thursday, February 24, 2005 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM following a sudden illness. Clarence was born March 5, 1934 in Cuervo, NM to the home of Johnny H. Cones and the former Edna Harrison. He was reared at Cuervo, Santa Rosa, and made his home at Fort Sumner in 1945. Clarence married Louise McGuffin on January 3, 1952 in Fort Sumner. Clarence owned and operated a grocery store in Fort Sumner for several years. He later owned and operated a feed store. Clarence worked as a farmer in the Fort Sumner Valley most of his life. He was employed by K.W. Cubers, and later for Finney and Head Farms. He drove a truck for Furr’s for several years until his retirement. He enjoyed woodworking, going to Auctions, gardening and square dancing. He attended Square Dances in the surrounding area. According to his family Clarence was a people person. He enjoyed sharing his vegetables with family in friends in the Fort Sumner community. He had a great sense of humor and always had a joke to tell, a second one if you had time to listen. Clarence was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be dearly missed by his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Louise Cones in 1997; a son Ricky Cones in 2001; his parents, a granddaughter Sandy Cones in 1984; two sisters Lola Foster and Grace Foster; and one brother Lloyd Cones. Survivors include two sons Roy Lee Cones of Clovis, NM; Mickey Cones and wife Sheryl of Fort Sumner; two daughters Janice Cones of Sedalia, Missouri; and Judy Lynn Garcia and husband Javier of Grand Prairie, TX; a daughter-in-law Denise Cones of Fort Sumner; two sisters Annie Mae Finney of Fort Sumner and Lois Roper of Carrizozo, NM. Other survivors include 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and many friends. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2005 from the Fort Sumner Cemetery with Rev. Coy Brewer officiating. Pallbearers will include Roy Lee Cones, Javier Garcia, Mickey Cones, Jerry Cones, Michael Cones, Steve Schutte, and Eddie Muller.
