Conrad Ruben Vance, 81 of Fort Sumner, NM died Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at his home following an illness. Conrad was born January 25, 1927 in McAlister, NM to the home of Otis James Vance and the former Anna May Wilke. He attended school at McAlister. Conrad married Ruby Foster on July 24, 1948 in Clovis, NM. They made their home in Roswell, Artesia, and Albuquerque before settling in Fort Sumner in 1958. Conrad worked as an auto mechanic for many years. He opened a welding shop in Fort Sumner and constructed metal barns in the Fort Sumner Valley. He also worked as a custom harvester in the valley for several years. Conrad and Ruby delivered the Clovis News Journal in Fort Sumner for over 20 years. Conrad enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby on Nov. 23, 2002; his parents; and a sister Margaret Rose Vance. Survivors include a daughter Judy Roybal and husband Manuel of Fort Sumner; two sons Tommy Vance and wife Chris of Hay Market, Virginia; George Vance and wife Jean of Round Rock, TX; four granddaughters Adriane Roybal of Fort Sumner; Theresa Long and husband Billy of Queen Creek, AZ; Heather Vance Moe and husband Matt of Virginia; Sarah Vance Welborn of Hutto,TX; three grandsons Kirk Vance of Dallas, TX; Chad Vance of Hay Market, VA and Jeffrey Vance of Round Rock, TX along with two great-grandchildren J.D. Roybal of Queen Creek, AZ and Ruby Noel Moe of Winchester, VA. Funeral services will be held at 3PM Saturday, October 11, 2008 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel IN Fort Sumner with Rev. Coy Brewer officiating. Burial will follow in the Vance family plot at Fort Sumner Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 180, Fort Sumner, NM 88119.
