Jose Francisco Romo Olivas, 77 a longtime Madera, CA resident died Friday, July 14, 2000 at Madera Rehabilitation Center, Madera, California. Jose was born May 2, 1923 in Cuervo, Guadalupe County, NM to the home of Feliberto Olivas and the former Teodocia Romo. He attended school at Dilia and Santa Rosa. Jose made his home in Fresno, California for many years working as a gardener and landscaper. He also worked at different jobs as a handyman. During the summer months he worked at Yosemite National Park for several years. Due to declining health Jose made his home at Madera Rehabilitation Center in Madera, CA for the past 17 years. He was preceded in death by his father in 1970 and his mother in 1983. Survivors include three sisters Mary Jane Olivas Bunce of Clovis, NM; Estella Olivas Lovato and husband Enrique of Fort Sumner; Mary Lou Olivas Ruiz of Albuquerque; two brothers Genaro and wife Rocio Olivas of San Jose, CA; Feliberto “Phil” Olivas and wife Irene of Sacramento, CA. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, July 20, 2000 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 21, 2000 from the church with Father Stephen Shultz officiating. Burial will follow in the Lovato family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
