Bessie Lucille Borden, 92, a longtime Fort Sumner resident died Wednesday, February 16, 2000 in the Pecos Valley Care Center following an illness. Mrs. Borden was a resident of the Pecos Valley Care Center since June 1988. She was born November 24, 1907 in Steelville, Missouri to the home of William and Anna (Nicholson) Holland. She attended school at Steelville. Bessie married Floyd Cordell Borden on July 10, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, they made their home in Fort Sumner in 1930. Bessie operated a thrift and gift shop in Fort Sumner from 1946 until July 1984. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964, an infant son in 1933, her parents, three sisters and one brother. Survivors include four children, two daughters Lucille Usrey of Clovis, Jean and husband Bob Head of Fort Sumner, two sons Earl and wife Jan Borden and Roy and Eloise Borden of Clovis, NM. Other survivors include ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and eleven great great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, February 19, 2000 from the Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner, NM. Mr. Skip Clark will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons Johnny Williamson, Bobby Williamson, Larry Williamson, Danny Williamson, DeWayne Williamson, Roy Borden Jr., and Jimmy Head. Honorary bearers will be all her many friends. Arrangements entrusted to Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
