Rose Miriam Child, 95 a resident of Fort Sumner since 1966 died Tuesday February 1, 2000 in the Pecos Valley Care Center following an illness. Mrs. Child was born March 15, 1904 in Whiting, Kansas to the home of Charles Phillip Brown and the former Cora Rose McBride. In 1909 her family sold their property in Kansas and moved to Lucy, New Mexico Territory to file on a dry farm, they later moved to Carthage, NM where her mother taught school. They also made their home in San Marcial and Magdalena. She was baptized into the Methodist Church at a revival meeting in Magdalena, NM. In 1918 they moved to Albuquerque where she attended high school on Central Avenue, which was the only high school at that time. She graduated from high school in 1924 and attended the University of New Mexico. She taught school at Bluewater, Estancia, Gamerco, and Hot Springs, New Mexico. In 1930 she returned to U.N.M. where she received her A.B. Degree. She returned to teaching at Estancia, NM. She married Kenneth William Child on February 3, 1934 at Gamerco, NM; they made their home at Bluewater, NM. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on March 1, 1940. Rose and Kenneth made their home in San Francisco for several years where Rose substituted at the San Francisco City Nursery, and also worked as a clerk at Hales Department Store and the Emporium Department Store. Following her husbands death on February 3,1963, Rose moved to Fort Sumner, the following year, to care for her mother. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter Shirley Rose Child on May 8, 1957, and a sister Mary Kilmer in 1989. Survivors include two sons Dr. Rex Brown of Gray Georgia and Orville Gene Child of Utah, along with 7 grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 4, 2000 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Sumner, Bishop Larry Hancock will officiate. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery.
