Petra Pena, 84 a longtime Fort Sumner resident died Tuesday, January 25, 2000 in the De Baca General Hospital following an illness. Petra was born October 1, 1915 in Tulosa, San Miguel County, New Mexico. She made her home in Fort Sumner in 1921. She was reared and attended school at Fort Sumner. She worked as a housekeeper for the Campbell and Carr families for many years. She also worked with her family at the theatre in Fort Sumner for over 30 years as the projector operator. She was a lifelong catholic and member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters Margaret Hernandez, Charlotte Pena, Lois Silva, Viola Mares, an infant sister; two brothers Phillip Pena and Ramon Pena. Survivors include four brothers Joe Pena of Fort Sumner; Benny and wife Georgia Pena of Muleshoe, TX; Tony and Faye Pena of Fort Sumner; Fele and Pat Pena of Muleshoe, TX. Also surviving are Charlotte Pena Chavez and husband Sam of Fort Sumner, Linda Montoya and husband Querino of Santa Rosa, NM who were raised as sisters to Petra. A nephew and neighbor, Eddie Pena, who looked after Petra on a daily basis also, survives along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Rosary services were held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, January 27, 2000 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated from the church on Friday, January 28, 2000 with Father Sotero A. Sena; Celebrant of the Mass. Burial followed at St. Anthony Cemetery. Pallbearers were her nephews, Gary Pena, Michael Pena, Joseph Pena, Robert Pena, Raymond Joe Samora, Ricky Mares, and Bill Chavez.
