William Davis

William “Bill” Davis 95 a longtime Fort Sumner, NM resident died Tuesday, August 26, 2003 in Amarillo, TX following an illness. Bill was born March 18, 1908 in Rising Star, TX the eldest of nine children born to the home William Edward Davis and the former Olive Julia Coe. Bill was reared and attended schools at Colorado City, TX, Hornet Chapel, TX, and Encino, NM. At age 14 Bill helped his family move from Texas to Encino, NM by driving their covered wagon on a trip that took 36 days. He helped make improvements on the family homestead over the years. Bill met Inez Corzine, they were married at Encino, NM on August 8, 1931. They made their home at Mountainair, NM where they raised their children. Inez passed away in February 1954. During this time Bill left his farming and began working for the Santa Fe Railroad. He remained with Santa Fe Railroad for 28 years before his retirement. He married Sadye Potter in 1956; they traveled the state with his job until they retired to Fort Sumner. Sadye passed away in March 1982. Bill was a devoted Christian, a member of Christ Full Gospel Church in Fort Sumner; he loved the Lord and doing His work. Bill loved all his church family and never met a stranger. Bill is survived by his children Dorothy Payne and husband Wayne; Herman Davis and wife Melba; Wesley Davis and Ellie; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two step-children and nine step-grandchildren; two brothers Elbert Davis and wife Laverne; Henry Davis and wife Nora; a brother in law Ernest Corzine; 21 nieces and nephews and many friends. He will be greatly missed. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 28, 2003 from the Christ Full Gospel Church in Fort Sumner with Rev. Anna Teeter officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 P.M. in the Mountainair Cemetery, Mountainair, NM. Pallbearers will include Buddy Hall, Sam Sena, David Bailey, Lee Koll, Field Irwin, Frank Martz, Lowell Brockmier, and Don Mattingly. Memorials may be made to the Christ Full Gospel Church P.O. Box 467; Fort Sumner, New Mexico 88119 or Crown of Texas Hospice 7201 Evans Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79106. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
