Billie Lea Best, 70 of Fort Sumner, NM died Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at her home following an illness. Billie was born February 20, 1933 in Arp, Texas to the home of Roy Norman Barber and the former Bernice Carty. She was reared and attended school at Kermit, TX. She made her home in Portales for twelve years prior to moving to Fort Sumner in March 2000. Billie was an artist; she enjoyed painting, cooking, and playing bridge. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner. She married Drue Best Jr. on December 20, 1967 in Morton, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband Drue Best Jr. of the home in Fort Sumner; two daughters Cindy Headrick of Sweetwater, TX; Tracy Smith and husband Charles of Mt. Pleasant, TX; two sons Dennis G. Schubert of Sonora, TX; and Drue R. Best III and wife Amy of Petersburg, Indiana; eight grandchildren Cody D. Schubert and Cassidy Schubert of Big Lake, TX; Adrianna Headrick and Myka Michelle Headrick of Duncan, OK; Clay Smith and Terry Smith of Mt. Pleasant, TX; Bailey L. Best and Carly Best of Petersburg, Indiana. Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 28, 2003 at 2:00 PM from the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner with Rev. Coy Brewer and Rev. Lewis Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Jerry Birdwell, Curtis Crawford, Nick Cortese, Robin Simmons, Alan West, and Bobby Russ. Visitation will be Thursday from 1PM to 6PM and Friday from 10AM to noon. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
