Santiago (Jimmy) Lucero, 69 a lifelong De Baca County resident died Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at Plains Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Jimmy was born November 22, 1933 in Littlefield, TX to the home of Alfredo Lucero Sr. and the former Camila Lopez. Jimmy attended school at Fort Sumner. He worked as a mechanic for several years and also worked in highway and building construction. He has suffered from arthritis for many years. Jimmy married Romana Chavez on October 11, 1952 in Fort Sumner. Jimmy was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner; and Knights of Columbus Council #8331 in Fort Sumner. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twins, Juan and Juanita Lucero; brothers Frank Lucero, Audon Lucero, Pilar Lucero, and a sister Vicenta Aragon. Survivors include his wife Romana Lucero of the family home in Fort Sumner; five sons Manuel Lucero of Fort Sumner; Billy Lucero of Melrose, Victor Lucero and wife Elaine of Roswell, NM, Peter Lucero of Fort Sumner; and Paul Lucero and wife Debbie of Fort Sumner; four daughters Annie Lucero, Amada Lucero, and Lucille Chavez and husband Carlos of Fort Sumner; and Cecilia Moore and husband Tim of Clovis, NM, and a granddaughter he raised Ashley Moore of Clovis, NM. Also surviving are four sisters Santana Coronado, Irene Madrid, Jesusa Martinez, and Rebecca Lopez, and two brothers Alfredo Lucero and Jake Lucero all of Fort Sumner, along with 22 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, March 6, 2003 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner; Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M., Friday, March 7, 2003 with Father Stephen Schultz officiating. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Manuel, Victor, Billy, Paul, and Peter Lucero and Tim Moore. Honorary bearers will be Carlos Chavez, Michael Lucero, Ephraim Chavez, and Jimmy Arias. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10AM to 6PM at the funeral home, and Friday from 10AM – 11AM at the church. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
