Manuel L. Madrid, 87 a longtime Vaughn, NM resident died Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at Laurel Ridge Care Center in Clovis, NM. He was born April 8, 1917 in Puerto De Luna, NM to the home of Joseph Madrid and the former Elauteria Luna. Manuel married Elena Montoya on February 19, 1949 at Encino, NM. Manuel worked as a custodian at the Vaughn Public school and as a railroad trackman. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II with Troop “B” 101th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron as a Demolition Specialist. His tour of duty included Rhineland and Central Europe from 1942 until his honorable discharge on October 18, 1945. Manuel returned to Vaughn, NM where he managed Woody’s Truck Stop and the Ranchview Café. He also worked as a carpenter. Manuel was a lifelong catholic and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vaughn. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, music and dancing. He also enjoyed pinon picking and discussing historical and current events with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Elena Madrid in 1992; a grandson Jeremiah Chavez in 1998; a son Benjamin Madrid in November 2004; a brother Meliton Madrid and a sister Juanita Garcia. Survivors include four daughters, Alice Rael of Clovis, NM; Betty Rhinehart and husband Bill of Albuquerque; Lucia Montonya and Louis of Clovis, NM; and Orphela Roybal and husband Alfredo of Vaughn, NM; two sons Isidro Madrid and wife Jane of Las Cruces, NM; Alex Madrid and wife Mary of Fort Sumner, NM; and a daughter-in-law Candace Madrid of Denver, CO. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and many friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 2, 2004 from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vaughn, NM. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated from the church at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 3, 2004 with Father Patrick Duffy officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Vaughn, New Mexico. Pallbearers will include Ernesto Roybal, John Rhinehart, Michael Aultman, Tommy Madrid, Joanne Rael, Margaret Rael, Denise Chavez, and Carla Jean Lopez. Honorary bearers will include Amy Lucero, Meliton Madrid Jr., Robert Garcia, Norbert Archibeque, Blas Madrid, and Adolpho Gauna. Mr. Madrid will lie in state at the Church on Thursday, December 2nd beginning at 6:00 p.m. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 804 North Fifth Street; Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
