Luther Calvin Gammill

Luther Calvin Gammill, 76 a lifelong Fort Sumner, NM resident died Monday, April 9, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Albuquerque. Calvin was born March 8, 1925 in Turkey, Texas to the home of Silas Luther Gammill and the former Icie Carrie Ellen Pickel. He made his home in Fort Sumner at the age of nine. Calvin attended Fort Sumner Public Schools. Calvin served in the U.S. Navy, during World War II, from January 10, 1941 until May 7, 1946. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Gunner’s Mate Third Class. Calvin married Nola Joyce Propps on November 4, 1956 in Fort Sumner. Calvin worked as a ranch hand for the Sykes Ranch at Fort Sumner for ten years. He was employed for 36 years in the Maintenance Department of the Fort Sumner Public Schools and also served as the Activity Bus Driver. Calvin served as custodian of the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner for 23 years where he was a member and Deacon. Calvin was a volunteer for the Fort Sumner Volunteer Fire Department since 1960 including 15 years as Fire Chief. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and sister-in-law Mark and Mae Gammill. Survivors include his wife Nola Joyce Gammill of the family home in Fort Sumner; a daughter April LaNette Khosrowabadi and husband Reza of Los Angeles, CA; a son Wayland Dean Gammill and wife Wanda of Los Lunas, NM; three grand-daughters Victoria Amber Gammill of Los Lunas; Linda Farzaneh Khosrowabadi and Juliet Fariba Khosrowabadi of Los Angeles; two nieces Heather Lee Davenport and husband Scott of Fort Sumner; Sherri Lynn McDaniels and husband Randy of Clovis; three brothers Theodore Gammill of Amarillo, TX; Glen Gammill and wife Vivian of Amarillo, TX; Ellis Gammill of Fort Sumner; five sisters Freda Ingalis of Napa, CA; Zona Hawthorne of Amarillo; Ella Mae Sandefer of Amarillo; Louise Harrison of Portales; and Hazel Smith and husband Owen of Fort Sumner; along with many brothers and sisters-in-law, aunts, and uncles. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 12, 2001 from the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner with Mr. Skip Clark and Rev. Coy Brewer officiating. Calvin will be transported from the Baptist Church to the Fort Sumner Cemetery in a fire engine where burial with military honors will follow. Pallbearers will be Randy McDaniel and members of the Fort Sumner Volunteer Fire Department. Honorary bearers will include Scott Davenport and the Deacons of the First Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
