Alfredo Lucero Jr., 82 a lifelong Fort Sumner resident died Monday, June 16, 2003 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. He was born August 6, 1920 at Valdez Bluff, north of Lake Sumner. He was reared and attended school at Fort Sumner. Alfredo worked construction during the building of the Alamogordo Dam. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on August 5, 1942. Alfredo served with Company H 150th Infantry Division, his military occupation was a Heavy Machine Gunner 605. Alfredo was honorably discharged on November 24, 1945. His military citations included American Theater, Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his honorable discharge Alfredo returned to Fort Sumner where he worked as a lineman for the R.E.A. Farmers Electric Cooperative for 28 years. He retired in 1985. Alfredo was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner; and the American Legion. Alfredo loved the outdoors; camping, hunting and fishing were his passion. He enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren about the outdoors. His grandchildren all called him “Grandpa Fish”. Alfredo was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Audon, Frank, and Santiago Lucero; and a sister Vicenta Aragon. Survivors include two daughters Felipa Lucero, and Teresa Marshall and husband Keith of Fort Sumner; five sons Nick J. Lucero of Fort Sumner, Agapito M. Lucero and wife Margaret Lucero of Fort Sumner; Gabriel Lucero and wife Sis of Grand Junction, Colorado, Ruben Lucero and wife Jody of Fort Sumner; Simon Lucero and wife Tammy of Fort Sumner; also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one brother Jake Lucero of Fort Sumner and four sisters Santana Coronado of Roswell, NM; Jessie Martinez of Fort Sumner; Lela Madrid of Fort Sumner; and Rebecca Lopez of Fort Sumner along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, June 19, 2003 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner; Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 20, 2003 from the church with Father Sotero A. Sena, celebrant of the Mass. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery in Fort Sumner. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Michael, Rudy, Gregg, Agapito Jr., Robert, James, and Nick Lucero Jr., Bryan and Jessie Marshall.
