Shirley Mae Marshall, 71 a lifelong De Baca County resident died Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell, NM following an illness. Shirley was born March 7, 1932 in Fort Sumner to the home of Thomas Shirley Conwell and the former Myrtle Mae Patterson. Shirley attended Fort Sumner Public schools. She married Hubert R. Marshall on March 24, 1950 in Santa Rosa, NM. Shirley worked for her grandfather who owned the Patterson Insurance Agency in Fort Sumner. Following his death she operated the agency for several years. Shirley later worked for the Department of Human Services for several years. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Shirley enjoyed painting, bowling, fishing, traveling with the “Evil Eight”, and visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Fort Sumner Dance Club, Women’s International Bowling Congress, and the NM Bowling Hall of Fame. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter Linda Lee Marshall in 1953, and an infant brother Donny. Survivors include her husband of 53 years Hubert R. Marshall of the family home north of Fort Sumner; a daughter Marcia Vick and husband John of Gordonville, Texas; a son Tommy Marshall and wife Tricia of Fort Sumner; two sisters Jackie Barbee and husband Bill of Azle, TX and Mary Ann Hackworth and husband Gerald of Goose Creek, SC. Also surviving are four grandchildren Scott Marshall and Keith Marshall of Fort Sumner, NM; Michawn Rucker of Coeur D Alene, Idaho and Rex Vick of Dallas, TX, along with Seven Great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 14, 2003 from the Fort Sumner Church of Christ with Mr. Mitch Gray and Rev. Coy Brewer officiating. Burial will follow in the Marshall family plot at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Rex Vick, Scott Marshall, Keith Marshall, Stephen Barbee, Jeff Vick, and Terry Rucker. Honorary bearers will be all her many friends.
