George William Waddill, 85 a longtime Fort Sumner educator died Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis following an illness. Mr. Waddill was born February 15, 1916 in Nind, Missouri the son of Harvey Samuel Waddill and the former Nellie Geneva Conkalin. He was reared on a farm in Avondale, Colorado. George married Jennie Barnhill on August 8, 1947 in Kirksville, Missouri. Following four years and six months of service in the U.S. Army, George attended NE Missouri State Teacher’s College at Kirksville, Missouri. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1951 and his Masters Degree in 1952. He taught school for one year in Missouri before making his home in Fort Sumner in 1952. He taught at Fort Sumner Public Schools for 29 years, retiring in 1981. He was a life member of Curry County D.A.V. Post #6 and a life member of the National Education Association. George was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Jimmy Waddill, three sisters Florence Virginia Mendell, Gracia Simler, and Opal Carter. Survivors include his wife of 54 years Jennie Waddill of the home in Fort Sumner; two sons George Waddill Jr. of Tulsa, OK; Stephen Waddill of Jacksonville, FL; two daughters Karen Petersen of Fort Sumner and Sharon Petersen of Farmington, NM, also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, at Mr. Waddill’s request no funeral services will be held. The Waddill family prefers memorial contributions to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
