Hazel Martin Carr, 94 a lifelong De Baca County resident died Monday, November 19, 2001 at Retirement Ranch in Clovis, NM following a short illness. She was born August 2, 1907 at Canyon Blanco Ranch. She attended Fort Sumner schools beginning grade school at a one-room schoolhouse in Canton, NM. Hazel married Sam Martin on November 22, 1926 at Portales, NM. He preceded her in death in 1969. Hazel worked as a USO volunteer at the Fort Sumner Air Base during World War II. She also served for many years as a Boy Scout Den Mother and was a longtime member of the Fort Sumner Women’s Club. She was also a member of two bridge clubs in Fort Sumner. Hazel was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner. She loved to play bridge and spend time with her children and their families. Hazel married Marion Pembroke “Pem” Carr in 1971 at Roswell, New Mexico. He preceded her in death in 1982. She was also preceded in death by a step-son Ray Martin; three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two sons Herbert Martin and wife Mary Louise of Lubbock, Texas; George Martin and wife Mary Evelyn of Estancia, NM; two daughters Ernestine Hagerman and husband Jack of Topeka, Kansas; and Norma Lee Wood and husband Floyd Earl “Flea” of Fort Sumner, NM. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, 12 Great-grandchildren, and 2 Great-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 23, 2001 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Sumner, New Mexico with Rev. Monty Leavell and Rev. Howell Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Glenn Hagerman, Jack Martin Hagerman, Dwight Martin, Michael Martin, Earl Turnbow, and Jeff Billberry. Honorary bearers will be Forrest Waller, Tye Martin, and Claude Baes. Visitation will be Thursday from 4PM to 7PM and Friday from 10AM until service time. The family prefers memorials to the First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner or the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association.
