Dan Owen Savage, 84, a resident of Deming for 16 years, passed away in El Paso, Texas on Saturday afternoon, April 6, 2002, after having been airlifted there in an attempt to save his life after an accident in Deming. Mr. Savage had taken his wife, Claudia, to town to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary and was hit by a car while attempting to cross the street. Mr. Savage was born in Buchanan, New Mexico to Otis and Janie Riley Savage on July 4, 1917. He was a veteran of World War II. He was Past Master of Melrose Masonic Lodge #39, Scottish Rite, Melrose Eastern Star and Past President of the Game Fowl Breeders Association. He attended Ft. Sumner Schools and some college at E.N.M.U. He worked as a Utilities Foreman at Cannon Air Force Base for about 30 years. He married Claudia Justiss on April 6, 1942 in Biloxi, Mississippi. He farmed north of Taiban for many years. Mr. Savage loved team roping, hunting, raising game fowl, fighting roosters & hunting with dogs. Mr. Savage was also a musician and played the violin and the mandolin. He led an active life up until his accident. Mr. Savage is survived by his wife, Claudia, of the home; a daughter and her husband – Sharen & Max Fraze of Clovis; two sons and their wives – Sidney & Charlsie Savage of T or C and Rod and Scotty Savage of Portales; a sister – Ada Mae Fox of Ft. Sumner; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; two nieces – Maurcenia Dewbre of Ft. Sumner; Cloreta Hawk of Clovis; a great-niece – Jimmie Dee Fox of Ft. Sumner and a nephew – Jimmy Fox of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother – Ben Hines and a nephew – Owen Fox. Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. at the Ft. Sumner Cemetery with Rev. Mike Teeter officiating. Casketbearers will be: Wade Fraze, Wesley Fraze, JoSeth Savage, Joab Savage, Brad Wrye & Jim Fox. Honorary bearers will be his many friends & relatives; Jake, Cecil & Red West and Gerry Washburn. Chavez Funeral Home of Ft. Sumner was in charge of arrangements.
