Manuel M. Romero, 74 a lifelong Fort Sumner resident died Monday, January 26, 2004 at his home following an illness. Manuel was born June 17, 1929 to the home of Higinio Romero and the former Ricardita Martinez. He attended school at Fort Sumner. Manuel married Annie Griego on November 17, 1961 at Clovis, NM. Manuel worked as an orderly for Pecos Valley Care Center for 10 years, he later worked for 13 years as a custodian at the Fort Sumner Public Schools. Manuel was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner; he loved music, dancing, wood work, fishing, and working in his yard. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan and attended all sporting events. Manuel especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son George M. Romero; four brothers Carlos, Alfredo, Kenneth, and Timoteo Romero. Survivors include his wife Annie Romero; four daughters Theresa Wood and husband Kevin; Nancy Romero; Lucy Sena and husband Lennard all of Fort Sumner; Diane Hernandez and Isidro of Amarillo, TX; one son George Romero and wife Donella of Clovis, NM; two step-sons Orlando Garcia and wife Priscilla of Santa Rosa, NM; and Fred Garcia and wife Bonnie of San Antonio, TX; three sisters Louisa Romero of Fort Sumner; Clara Olona and husband Joe of Clovis, NM; and Romana Sena and husband Mariano of Fort Sumner. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, January 29, 2004 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner; Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the church at 1:00 P.M. Friday with Father Sotero A. Sena officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sam Sena, Gerald Sena, Paul Pacheco, Randy Romero, Pablo Griego, and Richard Sandoval. Honorary bearers will be all his family and friends. Visitation will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 1PM to 6PM at the funeral home.
