Madison “Mack” Winn, 88 a cowboy and longtime De Baca County rancher died Thursday, January 13, 2005 at Fort Bayard Veterans Medical Center. Mack was born September 17, 1916 in Fort Stockton, Texas to the home of William Everett Winn and the former Mary Jane Arthur. His family homesteaded near Yeso, NM where Mack attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, as a Private First Class and a member of Troop “B” 252nd Remount Quartermaster Squadron. Mack was honorably discharged on August 21, 1943. He married Dorothy Williams on January 31, 1942 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mack ranched in several NM communities including Pintada; Pie Town; Eden Valley, and along the Pecos River in De Baca and Chaves County. Mack raised and trained Quarter Horses, he loved to rope, work cattle and hitch his wagon team. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Fort Sumner; the American Quarter Horse Association; and served on the Junior Rodeo Association Board of Directors in the 1960’s. Mack was a member of the Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Winn on October 13, 1994; a brother Pat Winn, and two sisters Mae Dean and Mary Jane Williams. Survivors include a daughter Nola Moyers and husband Dennis of Gilbert, AZ; two sons Andy Winn and wife Gloria of Moriarty, NM; and Mack Dan Winn of Fort Sumner. Also surviving are two sisters Lovilla Bradfute of Moriarty, NM and Ella Tyree of Prescott, AZ along with 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005 from the family plot in Fort Sumner Cemetery with Dan Craig officiating. Pallbearers will include Gary Lynch, John Winn, Tommy Irwin, Raymond Samora, Eldon Williams, Todd Templeton, and Bobby Templeton. Honorary bearers will be Kenneth Cook, Carl Hayward, Cecil West, and Delbert Long. Visitation will be Saturday from 10am to 3pm at the funeral home.
