Melody Pennington Garcia, 43 of Fort Sumner died Friday, June 4, 2004 in Fort Sumner. Melody was born August 23, 1960 in Fort Sumner the fourth child born to the home of Luther and Lavinia (Sullivan) Pennington. She was reared and attended schools at Fort Sumner. Melody made her home in Florida for several years where she completed classes in Jail Administration. She was also an Assistant Fire Chief for the Old Town, Florida Volunteer Fire Department. Melody returned to Fort Sumner where she continued her On-Line studies in Criminal Justice. Melody served as a De Baca County Deputy during the Champ Landrum administration. She later worked several years in the De Baca County Corrections Department where she served as Jail Administrator. Melody currently was employed as a Licensed Bail Agent by Hank’s Bail Bond Company in Clovis. Melody enjoyed going to movies, spending time with her friends, and bowling where she competed in two bowling leagues at the local and state level. Melody was a strong supporter of the Law Enforcement Community. She was a compassionate and caring mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by an infant son David Bryan Brown in 1980; her husband Carl A. Brown in 1992; and her father Luther Pennington in 2001. Survivors include a son Carl A. Brown and his fiancé Amy Davis of Riverview, Florida; her mother Lavinia Pennington of Fort Sumner; two sisters Barbara Corbett and husband Bob of Gansevoort, NY, Belinda Branson of Vancouver, WA; a brother Robert Pennington and wife Cindy of Fort Sumner, NM; an uncle Harold Sullivan and wife Mott; an aunt Caroline Reames of South Carolina and an aunt Flossie Pollard of Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, June 10, 2004 from the First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner with Rev. Monty Leavell officiating. Cremation will follow the services. Pallbearers will be Gordon Morris, Chris Hughes, Stanley Morris, Gary Graves, J.O. Achen, and Michael Perry.
