Joe A. Ulibarri, affectionately known as "Papa Smurf" age 63, passed away September 8, 2004.. Joe was born January 16, 1941 in El Llano de Medio, NM to the home of Jose F. and Cipricia Vigil Ulibarri. He was reared and attended schools in Espanola. Joe married Alice Archuleta in 1960 at the Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz, NM. He worked as a carpenter most of his life. Joe recently retired after working over 15 years for Franken Construction. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping and going to the casinos. He is preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Magdalena Ulibarri and his brother Ralph Ulibarri and a step brother Jerry Salas. Survivors include his wife Alice Ulibarri of the family home in La Loma, his children Shirley Ulibarri-Sheets and husband Russ of Albuquerque, Sheila Stevenson and husband James of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Shelly Ulibarri of Espanola, Sharon Ulibarri and boyfriend Siaosi Akauola of Albuquerque and Jerome Ulibarri and girlfriend Amanda Pacheco of La Loma, his grandchildren Kendall Sheets, Connor Sheets and Ashley Roybal. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Paulita DeAguero and husband Jerry of Chimayo, Betty Shaw and husband James of Albuquerque, Manuel Ulibarri and wife Charline of Alcalde, Sally Alarid and husband Edward of Espanola, Larry Ulibarri of El Rancho, Laura Ulibarri of Alcalde, Gloria Chavez of Albuquerque, Arnold Ulibarri and wife Cynthia of La Loma, Michael Ulibarri and wife Donna of Golondrinas and his sisters in law Ida Ulibarri of Albuquerque and Ramona Salas also of Albuquerque, along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Friday evening September 10, at 7:00 from St. Joseph Church in Anton Chico. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 11, at 10:00 am also from St. Joseph Church with Father Patrick Duffy officiating. Serving as Pallbearers will be Benny Ulibarri, Anthony DeAguero, Amos Ulibarri, Javier Alarid, Eric Ulibarri, Matthew Chavez, Gabriel Sandoval and Anthony Ulibarri. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Anton Chico. Viewing will be held at St. Joseph Church on Friday from 3:00 PM until rosary time. In lieu of flowers the family prefres contributions be made to The American Cancer Society. All services are entrusted to the Chavez Funeral Home of Santa Rosa.
