Margaret “Bobbie” West, 95 a longtime Fort Sumner resident died Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the Slaton Care Center, Slaton, Texas following an illness. Bobbie was born January 6, 1913 in Dodson, Quay County, New Mexico the daughter of Augustus Judson and Mary (Cooper) Byars. She was reared and attended schools at Dodson and Fort Sumner. Bobbie married James Thomas “J.T.” West on July 2, 1932 in Fort Sumner. She was a past member of Rebekah’s, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Fort Sumner Dance Club, Quilting Club and Women’s Club. She enjoyed reading, dancing, and fishing. She was also a “rock hound” and enjoyed collecting arrowheads. Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband J.T. West in June 1982. Survivors include a daughter Peggy Myers of Slaton, Texas; her son James West and his wife Kathy of Fort Sumner; three granddaughters Debbie Thurman of Slaton, TX; Kayleen West Godinez and husband Joe of Albuquerque and Barbara West of Albuquerque. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren Stephanie Siler of Amarillo, TX; Sasha Godinez and Serena Godinez both of Albuquerque; Dylan Thurman of Big Springs, TX and Sterlyng Thurman of Slaton, Texas along with numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 12, 2007 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Sumner, NM with Dan Craig officiating. Private burial of her cremains will be at Fort Sumner Cemetery. The family requests memorials be made to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 180, Fort Sumner, New Mexico 88119 or to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE Suite 300, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87111.
