William Clyde Battles, 94, a farmer and rancher at House, NM died Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Laurel Ridge Healthcare Center in Clovis, NM following an illness. Clyde was born April 29, 1909 in Little Rock, Arkansas to the home of William J. Battles and the former Ena Bray. His family homesteaded 13 miles east of Santa Rosa. Clyde attended school at Santa Rosa, NM. The family moved to Hereford, TX in 1921 where they farmed and ranched. Clyde was a World War II ARMY veteran attached to the 1857th Service Command Unit. He served from March 13, 1942 until his honorable discharge on October 10, 1945. Clyde served in Northern France, and Rhineland. His citations include two Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He married Emma Lestina Williams on August 24, 1946 at Amherst, TX. Clyde and Cutie made their home at House, NM in 1949. Clyde loved horses, and cattle. He was a loving father and grandfather. Clyde was preceded in death by his wife Emma “Cutie” Battles on March 3, 2000; a brother Homer Battles on September 2, 2002; and a sister Hazel Dale in 1964. Survivors include a daughter Peggy Sue Tivis and husband Danny of House, NM; three grandchildren Monty Tivis of House, NM; Robyn Miller and husband Kelly; and Trevor Tivis all of Canyon, Texas. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 20, 2003 from the House Baptist Church with Rev. Sherman Martin officiating. Burial will follow at the House Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Monty Tivis, Trevor Tivis, Kelly Miller, Ross Sinclair, Charles Franklin, and Clifford Franklin. Honorary bearers will be Bob Franklin, Lloyd Morrow, Eldon Blackburn, and Henry Jaramillo.
