Hilbert Riberia Mares

April 7, 1925 — September 16, 2002

Hilbert R. Mares, 77 a lifelong Fort Sumner resident died at his home in Fort Sumner on September 16, 2002. He was born in Fort Sumner on April 7, 1925 to the home of Rito S. Mares and the former Catarina Riberia. Hilbert worked for over 40 years as a custodian, maintenance man, and bus driver for the Fort Sumner Public Schools. He retired in 1992. Hilbert was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. He enjoyed driving around town, visiting with his friends, and tending to his livestock. He was a faithful supporter of the Fort Sumner school athletic program and attended all sporting the events. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother in 1923 and his twin brother Albert R. Mares on April 21, 2000. Survivors include four brothers Thomas Mares and Cresenciano “Chano” Mares of Fort Sumner, Robert Mares of Belen and Ruben Mares of Albuquerque. Also surviving are two nephews and four nieces along with numerous other relatives and many friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, September 19, 2002 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner, NM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the church at 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 20, 2002 with Father Leo Padget officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
