Evelyn S. Scott, died in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico, after a debilitating siege of Parkinson's disease on Thursday, November 14, 2002. You may remember her smiling face from behind the Credit & Catalog Counter of J.C. Penney in Loretto Center and later in Mesilla Valley Mall in Las Cruces, NM until she retired in 1986. She will be remembered most for her never-failing quiet dignity and cheery disposition, a beautiful person inside and out. Her family will remember her constant loving presence through the years, always ready to sit down with a Coke and talk, not to mention all those great cake snacks. Evelyn Moore Shirley was born in Cristobal Colon, Panama on February 20, 1923, growing up in the Canal Zone with extended voyages to the Jordan and Shirley family compounds in Haymarket, VA. She met and married her husband, George B. Scott in Panama in 1941. They were subsequently stationed in various locations, then spent two years living in Lima, Peru and ten years in Lincoln, NE during which time she enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her three children – two daughters, Sharon and JoAnne, and a son, Mike. In 1958, they continued their grand adventure by settling in Las Cruces, NM, where she chose to remain for most of the rest of her life. After the divorce, she began her 20+ year career at the J.C. Penney Company. After retirement, she remained active tending her beautiful yard and enjoying the company of her friends and family, including her late sister, Mrs. Anne S. Weldon. Her daughter Sharon and husband, Bill Marshall, reside in Walhalla, S.C., daughter JoAnne and husband Joe Jackson, reside in Springer, N.M., her son, Mike and wife, Patti, reside in Ft. Sumner, N.M. She also has seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. After a memorial service on Saturday, November 16, 2002 in Ft.
