Joyce Elizabeth Finney

Joyce E. Finney, 79 of St. Vrain, NM died Friday, January 31, 2003 at the Pecos Valley Care Center in Fort Sumner following an illness. Joyce was born August 4, 1923, in State Center, Iowa the daughter of Orville Homer Farmer and Perle Robuck. She was reared in Moberly and Kirksville, Missouri. Joyce served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Communications Specialist. Following her honorable discharge on Nov. 19, 1945, Joyce graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teacher's College. She taught school at Mexico City, Missouri and Phoenix, Arizona. She later worked as a switchboard operator for a Phoenix, AZ bank. On her retirement in 1980, she moved to St. Vrain. Joyce volunteered as a “Pink Lady” with the High Plains Auxiliary in Clovis, NM for several years. She was a member of their quilting club and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Clovis where she was a Deacon. According to her family she was a world traveler including trips to Ireland and England. She truly enjoyed her retirement. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband John C. Finney on January 19, 1993, and a sister Oreta Farmer. Survivors include two daughters Linda Turner and husband Roy of Fort Sumner, NM, Martha Lisner and husband Charles of Pensacola, FL; four grandchildren Robert Allen Shaw and wife Mistine of Surprise, AZ; Karen Ciancio and husband Fred of Clovis, NM; Jillian Lisner and Morgan Lisner of Pensacola, Florida. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 4, 2002, at First Presbyterian Church. 1101 Pile Street, Clovis, New Mexico, with Rev. Lance Clemmons and Rev. Anna Teeter officiating. Cremation will follow with private burial at a later date. Visitation will be Sunday from 1PM to 6PM at the funeral home. The family prefers memorials to the Christian Children’s Home, Portales, New Mexico. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner, NM.
