Juan Antonio Lopez

Juan A. Lopez, 84 a lifelong De Baca County resident died Saturday, November 30, 2002 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM following an illness. Juan was born April 12, 1918 in Alamo, NM to the home of Rafael Lopez and the former Frances Sena. He was reared at Fort Sumner. Juan served in the U.S. Army with the 103rd Quarter Master Company as a truck driver. He served at Sicily Naples, Southern France, and Rhineland Central Europe. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; and the American Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 26, 1945. Juan worked for the NM State Parks at Lake Sumner for several years. He worked road construction for K-Barnett Construction Company for many years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Juan was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Florentino Lopez, Agapito Lopez, and Cristobal Lopez and one sister Josie Garcia. Survivors include a sister Mary G. Chavez and husband Armando of Fort Sumner and a nephew, raised as a brother, Rafael Lopez of Denver, Colorado. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place, a rosary service will be held at 9:30 A.M. Friday, December 6, 2002 from St. Anthony Parish followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 A.M. Burial of cremains will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner. www.chavezfuneralhome.com
