Antonia A. Aragon

Antonia "Toney" A. Aragon, age 81, passed away suddenly December 3, 2002 at her home in Vaughn. Toney was born November 10, 1921 in Vaughn, NM to the home of Jose Ramon and Refugio Anaya Aragon. She was reared and attended schools in Vaughn. Toney worked as a waitress in Vaughn for several years as well as a cook for the headstart, distributing license plates, commodities and food stamps. She was an Honorary Life Member of the United States Air Force Air Defense Team and was honored with a cerficate of appeciation from the United States Air Force. Toney also served as a volunteer for the local Head Start Program, and worked as a Doctors assistant assisting in many child births. Toney loved fishing and you could see her on any given day fishing at the Power Dam in Santa Rosa, she also liked looking for arrowheads, loved taking care of her nieces and nephews and was an avid Sky Watcher, constantly watching the sky for unusual objects. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vaughn. Toney is preceded in death by her parents, five brothers Andres Madrid, Solomon Madrid, Manuel Aragon, Eulalio Madrid, and Alfredo Madrid; three sisters Ciria Martinez, Francisca Martinez, and Viola Mahar. Survivors include her nieces that she raised Rosana Angie Adkins Betty Martinez, Muriel Adkins and her daughters Ivory, Liberty and Iris. Also surviving are her Godchildren Julia Aguilar, Lily Trujillo Sanchez, Robert Madrid, Roberta Madrid Sanchez, Ivory Adkins, Muriel Adkins, Mary Ellen Otero, Rosana Adkins, Rosalie Montoya Read, Patsy Madrid and Nina Martinez. Rosary services were held on Thursday evening at 7:00 from St. Mary's Church. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 AM Friday from St. Mary's Church with Father Coleman Heffern officiating. Burial followed at the Evergreen Cemetery in Vaughn. Serving as Pallbearers were Isabro Martinez, Norman Madrid, Leo Montoya, Ruben Montoya, Ramon Montoya, David Read, Dave Erickson, Billy Madrid, Alfonso Martinez, Armando Martinez and Butch Del Curto. All services were under the direction of the Chavez Funeral Home of Santa Rosa.
