Marie Thomas Wilson, aged 90, long time resident of Fort Sumner died Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at her home with her family at her side. Marie was born August 29, 1927, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to parents George Lee and Ida Ethel Lillard Thomas. She attended school in Dalhart, TX and graduated from high school in Corsicana, TX. Marie grew up during the Depression and her family moved many times. In 1947 she moved to Melrose, NM, worked as a waitress and subsequently met and married Elmer Wilson on April 3, 1948 in the parsonage of the Ft Sumner Methodist Church. Together they owned Wilson Electric from 1978 to 2010. Marie enjoyed reading, tending to her flower beds and fishing and spoiling her pets. Marie is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Elmer Wilson of Fort Sumner; parents, George Lee Thomas and Ida Ethel Lillard Thomas; her sister, Betty Jo Boatman; brothers Henry A Thomas and George L Thomas as well as a great-grandson Liam Wilson in 2017. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Survivors include their children Daniel (Veola) Wilson of Drummonds, Tennessee and their five children, Dahna (Ryan) Barleben of South Carolina, Melissa (Robert) Barber of California; Daniel; Lee (Avonlea); and Mary Wilson all of Tennessee; Joan Brock of Fort Sumner and her two daughters, Jerrica Washburn and Alisha (Aaron) Saldivar and their father Jerry Gonzales of Fort Sumner; Donald (Martha) Wilson and daughter Kathryn (Salvador) Garcia of California. Also surviving Marie are eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Jene Morris of Ft Sumner and Ida Barclay of Texico and several nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Friday, December 29, 2017 in the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel with Lecil Richards officiating, burial will follow at the Fort Sumner Cemetery. The family prefers memorial contributions in Marie’s memory to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 180, Fort Sumner, NM 88119 designated for repairs to the cemetery fence/wall.
